On the Thursday 20 October IoD members and their guests gathered at a one-day conference to learn more about the critical elements of an acquisition or sale
Buying or selling a business continues to prove difficult as Britain remains in slow growth mode. So on Thursday 13 October the IoD hosted the Buying and Selling Private Companies conference, sponsored by Avondale, to provide delegates with a comprehensive step-by-step guide to buying and selling in today’s market. Topics included business valuations, optimising deal value, funding options and current economic risks and opportunities.
Chris Allner of Octopus Ventures, which invests in high-growth and entrepreneurial British SMEs looking for finance, focused on private equity and what companies should and shouldn’t do. “It’s a really tough environment out there. We thought we were coming out of the
recession but it seems to be trailing back,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s all about the people. That’s the biggest reason for an acquisition not working – you’ve got to know who you’re buying from as well as what,” he explained.
Mergers and acquisitions, financial, investment, legal and tax experts provided guidance to help attendees prepare for an acquisition or sale and navigate the associated complexities. Directors also had the opportunity to share information and experiences with their peers and network with other business leaders who were in a position to buy and sell.
